Owning It

“Owning it” and ownership came up in a recent peer group discussion.

There are plenty of motivational speakers, gurus, coaches who will tell you that “owning it” is powerful.

Many successful leaders, executives, and talking heads will say it’s part of their success.

But what is “it”?

“It”

Like the Knights Who Say “Ni,” your brain has a weakness about “it.”

“It” lives out there somewhere, not as a part of you. So when you start thinking and talking about something you do as “doing ‘it’,” you’re unconsciously distancing, not owning.

You’ve grown up being surrounded by countless examples of distancing and excusing. The voice inside your head that tells you what it thinks about what you’ve done is another distancing mechanism. That voice often belongs to someone from your past, and comes loaded with judgement and painful emotions.

Truly “owning it,” when “it” is something you’d like to stop doing, requires accepting that you chose to take that action for a reason. And when you’re not clear about the reason, commit to look for that reason without beating yourself up and falling into Shame.

Being conscious that everything you do is yours empowers you.

When you own “it”, truly and fully, “it” is all you. What’s the value in hating on part of yourself?

Learn how to own everything you do, even the mistakes, the errors, the moments where you feel “less than your best.”

Recognize when you go into Shame. Understand what purpose you’re serving, and find a more powerful path. Let Shame go.

Own all your “it.”

You can do this. I can help.
