You suffer from memory blocks far more than you realize.
When you’re remembering what happened “the last time,” you’re not present in the moment with what’s happening this time.
I remember yesterday, but the memory is in my head now. — Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time
When the memory is replaying, you’re not here now. Your replay of memory blocks you from concentrating on what’s happening now.
Unblocking
How do you get rid of your memory blocks?
First, know that remembering and memory are not “bad.” Learning from what has happened is a useful ability, as is being able to identify patterns.
What’s counterproductive is getting hijacked by the past. When you call up memory of a past upset, there are a whole host of differences between then and the present moment you overlook.
You get stuck trying to solve the past problem in the present, not the present problem in the now.
Recognize when you’re accessing the past and put up guardrails –
- Say out loud to yourself “I’m looking at the past, but only momentarily.”
- Commit to seeing what’s different now than it was then.
- Remind yourself that whatever happened then, you’re here now, so you got through it.
You can only act now – that’s where you have access to your freedom, power, and choice.
Don’t let memory block you from solving your problem.
You can do this. I can help.
