You understand the power that values have in your life. They shape how you act, how you perceive the world.
You live your values every day. They operate as filters on what you see as possibilities and actions.
If you’re not happy with where you are or who you are, then what values are dominating?
What’s in Charge?
Everything you do is a result of an Intention, a want or desire you have that gets turned into choice and/or action.
Again, if you’re not happy with “things,” then what’s in charge? What value or values do you act on the most?
One Day vs Every Day
Many times, you have goals that occur on a long time span, months or maybe years.
You know that at the end of the measurement period, you’ll be evaluated and hopefully recognized and rewarded. That could be monthly, quarterly, or even a whole year.
That’s 30, 90, or 365 days (plus time for evaluation) before you see the outcome of what you’ve valued.
You’re waiting for one day far off to get feedback on what you value.
What if you identified how to live your values every day, and could give yourself feedback about that daily?
How much more impactful would that be?
Operationalizing Values
Drew Dudley, in his book “This is Day One,” talks about how to operationalize values:
- Identify a key value
- Clearly define what the value means
- Operationalize that value by turning it into an action-oriented question you answer each day
Asking yourself an action-oriented question is critical. To take one of Drew’s examples, if your value was “Courage,” you might ask yourself “What did I do today that I wanted to avoid?”
Imagine the power of identifying your top 3-5 values, defining them, and building a habit of living them daily by asking yourself each day how you demonstrated them.
It can be life-changing – if you build the habit.
You also need to build Awareness of values you live daily out of habit, or programming, that you can release and let go. Maybe you find you’ve been putting too much importance on “safety” and it’s limiting your growth. Or “certainty” is blocking your curiosity.
Live your most important values every day, not for one special day.
You’ll grow more powerful, more free, and more at home in your own skin.
You can do this. I can help.
