Being Aware of the Fog
This is a continuation of The Fog.
It’s about those moments, where the anger, or fear, or stress descend like a fog.
You’ve made an Intention to change, and reflected on what that change will be and how that change serves you positively.
Now, let’s look at the next step.
Lighting the Fog
Sometimes, you only become aware of the fog after it’s come and departed. And somewhere in the middle of the fog, you’ve said and done things you wish you hadn’t.
Or maybe it’s a smothering, fearful fog, where you haven’t been able to think or speak, when later you wish you had.
Either way, congratulations on being human. Being shameful about those moments won’t serve you. Accepting them, and acknowledge that some part of you felt that was the necessary thing.
Now, ask yourself what you remember feeling during and before the fog. Shine light on your fog.
- What does the fog feel like?
- Where in your body do you feel the fog?
- Are there different kinds of fog, maybe an angry fog and a scared fog?
- How does it start, and how does it change as you feel it?
Maybe “fog” isn’t the right metaphor for what you feel. Maybe things turn red, or you have a sensation of increased pressure. Find your metaphor, and work backwards towards the beginning.
Space to Change
When you get in touch with what it feels like and sounds like, both internally and externally, you become more Aware of what may happen before it’s happened.
That Awareness creates space for you to act on your Intention to change and do something different.
Where before you would have followed your anger into an argument, you can choose curiosity and try to understand what someone is saying that’s upsetting you.
Or instead of your fear silencing you, the awareness of impending silence moves you to speak.
Growing your Awareness doesn’t happen all at once. It takes commitment and time.
You will still have moments of fog as you build Awareness. Remember, accept them and look at them, don’t shame yourself for them.
You can shine light on your fog, grow your Awareness, and that creates room for change.
That change gives you more of what you truly want, and brings you closer to who you are.
You can do this. I can help.
